Swissray Expands Radiology Offerings with Norland Acquisition

In a January 9th press release, Swissray International, Inc. announced the acquisition of Cooper Surgical Inc.’s Norland assets. Swissray has been a provider of digital radiography solutions for over 15 years. Their current offerings include:

  • ddrVersa – Fully-automated digital radiography system
  • ddrCruze – Mobile x-ray system
  • ddrPortable – Flat panel detector
  • ddrFormula – C-arm designed digital radiography system
  • ddrElement – Space-efficient digital radiography system

With this acquisition, Norland will become part of Swissray, although manufacturing of the Norland products will remain in Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin.

“Swissray operates on five continents and Norland manufacturing 02.04.14enhances our global capabilities and engineering strength” said Jack Lee, President and CEO of Swissray Global. “Also Swissray will build Norland’s position as the premier supplier of Bone Densitometry systems with a promise of delivering the most accurate Dual-Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry (DXA) systems utilizing the lowest radiation dose in the market.”

According to the World Health Organization’s report on Prevention and Management of Osteoporosis, “Of the many techniques developed to assess bone mass, bone mineral or other related aspects of skeletal mass or structure, the most highly developed technically and the most thoroughly validated biologically is DXA, which is regarded as the “gold standard”, with which the performance characteristics of less well-established techniques can be compared.”

Norland has been a provider of bone density assessment solutions for over 60 years. Norland currently offers the XR-600 and XR-800 Quickscan Pencil Beam DXA tables. The XR-600 includes a 6-foot table with a patient weight limit of 400 pounds. Standard scanning capabilities include AP Spine and Left & Right Hip. Optional scanning sites of Forearm, Small Subject, Research and Lateral, Soft-Tissue Composition are available. The XR-800 includes an 8-foot table with a patient weight limit of 560 pounds. Standard scanning capabilities include AP Spine, Left & Right Hip, Forearm, Whole-Body Soft-Tissue Composition and Total Skeletal Measurements. Optional scanning sites of Research and Small Subject are available.

Swissray’s acquisition of Norland is an initial step in expanding their presence in the medical imaging market. I cannot wait to see what they will offer next.
