In a world of shrinking hospital budgets and growing economic pressures, progressive finance departments are looking for new ways to reduce costs in their service lines. One quick and seemingly low risk method is by utilizing purchased services/contracted services. These encompass a wide range of products, including professional and technical services such as contracted pharmacies, emergency room and other physician staffing services. Examples of contracted or “routine” services include repair services, small equipment rental, laboratory testing services, construction services, IT and other support services.

Since 1980, healthcare spending has grown tenfold to over $2.6 trillion per year, which accounts for nearly 18% of the United States’ GDP. This rise in spending and its effect on the economy along with the social impact associated with healthcare costs has led it to become a major priority for policy makers. In particular, hospital care and physician/clinical services have been the focus of several legislative directives since they account for over half (51%) of all healthcare expenditures. The remaining expenses, associated with retail, nursing home and other personal care expenses are also being targeted but are not a prime focus of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act and the Taxpayer Relief Act.

Positive reimbursement can be a key factor in determining the financial viability of a service line. For 2013, most service lines will see market basket increases; however, one thing to keep in mind is, across the board, value-based programs under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act will start to kick in. Negative payments under the readmission reduction program and never events will be the first to make a major impact in the industry. In addition, hospitals will see reimbursement penalties if quality and patient satisfaction goals are not met. Because of this, not all budget committees will be driven by increased reimbursement incentives, but instead by technologies targeted to improving value directives.

The post 2013 Reimbursement Opportunities appeared first on MD Buyline.

McLaren Health Care, a large system in the Great Lakes region, had a newly acquired facility and needed to update it to the Philips MRI technology used by the rest of the system. The facility was a long-standing Siemens customer, and seemed committed to using Siemens’ MRI technology. McLaren engaged MD Buyline for more information regarding the two technologies, so they could convince the facility to make the switch.
