The Ebola virus incidents in West Africa and around the world have highlighted the need for wearing proper personal protective equipment (PPE) and training on how to use PPE. Healthcare workers who interact with patients with the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) are potentially at a higher risk of exposure. In response to this heightened risk, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Emory Healthcare have provided new guidelines for enhanced PPE and practices for healthcare workers. Although the recommendations are based on guidelines for EVD, there may be other infectious diseases for which similar guidelines and precautions may apply, and institutions should be prepared.
